Midterm in a few...

As of right now I'm not so pessimistic about my chem midterm. Yesterday I was sure of a C or D, but now I'm thinking I might get a high C. I know that sounds awful, but these are tests where the average is around 60. And last semester I got a C on one midterm, and a D on the other and I got a B+ in the class. HUGE curve. I was at a free studying/tutorting place last night and other people were talking about how they hoped that everyone else would fail, except for us; it sounded like a good plan to me.
And I learned just last night that Kevin, who is very smart in chem, is in my class! He is on my floor, and somehow we only just figured this out. Probably because he rarely goes to class. But I was excited.
The sprouts are almost done, I'm excited. I think I put a few to many seeds in there because the jar is pretty much full.
And now I'm gonna go take a midterm! wheee!

AND...

Now I'm done! yay! THe majority of the questions were directly from the practice test, so that was pretty easy. Still I'm not sure how I will do but it was a great start to the weekend. Now I'm gonna nap!

Sugars!

Imagine a four lane road, two lanes each way, but no little dotted lines, no passing lanes, and no laws. People seem to think it is a good idea to go REALLY slow about 2 or 3 cars abreast and block one whole side of the road. Now imagine this road at rush hour. This is the bike path that I have to bike every day. Only it all bikes, and there are people who think it is a good idea to walk in the middle of the bike path. So much chaos. One day I WILL run someone over-- on purpose.

I learned that carbs are just as bad for your teeth as sugar because the icky sugar bugs on your teeth are able to digest the carbs into sugars. so rinse out your mouth after you eat a cracker. but tea, coffee, and chocolate might actually have things that help with tooth decay

And xylitol, a sugar subsitute, actually helps prevent cavities and can repair minor tooth decay. Gum companies used to use it, but not so much anymore, and when they do use it, it is along with other surgar subsitutes that are not so good.

Saccharine is a completely synthetic sugar substitute that was banned for a while for being a possible carcinogen, and it is still banned in europe and canada but in 2000 the US decided that it was not "officially" a carginogen.

While cyclamates was falsely accused of being a carcenogen due to politics and it is still banned from use.

splenda is gross

Sugar in the Raw can't legally be called raw sugar because it is white sugar with molasses added.

It's healthy to Fletcherize your food.

What I learned today while reading "On Food and Cooking" by Harold McGee.

What I learned today while reading "On Food and Cooking" by Harold McGee.
We like meat because are tastebuds are trained to like things containing the right enzymes and proteins. We like sweet things because our mothers breast milk is sweet, so sweet things are good. When agricultuer really started in the Middle East 10,000 years ago our diet went from meat and veggies to grain and more grain. So both a less balanced diet with a lack of some important nutrients plus a huge population density increase led to poor heath, more disease and shorter lifespans. Health-wise we were better off being gatherer-hunters.
And artificial hives and the domestication of honey bees dates back to 2500 BC in Egypt.

Things That Smell Like WD-40

Carmex lip goo

Long's Brand T-Gell Shampoo

WD-40

Thats all I have for now.

But parallelipipeds is a silly silly word that not even my chem professor can pronounce.

And here is a very annyoing riddle that doesnt smell like WD-40. I just wanted to spread the irritation.

You stand at a fork in the road. Next to each of the two forks, there stands a guard.
You know the following things:
1. One path leads to Paradise, the other to Death. From where you stand, you cannot distinguish between the two paths. Worse, once you start down a path, you cannot turn back.
2. One of the two guards always tells the truth. The other guard always lies. Unfortunately, it is impossible for you to distinguish between the two guards.
You have permission to ask one guard one question to ascertain which path leads to Paradise. Remember that you do not know which guard you're asking -- the truth-teller or the liar -- and that this single question determines whether you live or die. The question is: What one question asked of one guard guarantees that you are led onto the path to Paradise, regardless of which guard you happen to ask?

More Silly Shorts From My FST 10 Class

http://www.themeatrix1.com/

http://www.moremeatrix.com/

We only watched the first one in class.

When we were talking a little about "free range" meats and stuff I was just wishing that he would play a clip from South Park, when they try and rescue the veal. cow curling!

Question:
when in life do we ever need the skill of in class essay writing?
(Not counting English classes.)

REalizations

I know I am silly but I just fully realized this week that just because someone says that she or he skis doesnt mean that they are any good at it. For some reason I just assumed that everyone took it seriously was was at least decent at it, but I have found that many people have only been once or twice.

AND

I am stuck in high school english. It is rediculous, I know how to write a fucking essay, at least I will get practice. Oh and we spent class today dicussing television, it was a waste of time. I mean yeah its cool to discuss how the media affects us and what we think about reality tv shows but what is the point?? You are wasting my time! Oh and a wonderfully intellegent girl asked if she could write a little less than 3 pages(doublespaced!) for her essay because she felt that she compromised the quality of her essay when she tried to add extra words to meet the lenght criteria. "I mean you wouldnt grade off would you if it was a little short? I mean you understand what I mean right?" Luckily the teacher had a nice snappy reply. But it was like I was back in 10th grad eiwth everyone asking what font, what if...? what if....? AH! so frustrating.

FST 10

Today in FST 10 I learned about Sylvester Graham, he liked whole wheat. Can you guess what he invented? And John Harvey Kellogg was the first Health Food millionaire, I wonder what he came up with?
We saw clips from a movie about his life, called The Road to Wellville, in which Sir Anthony Hopkins played Dr Kellogg. The clips were quite amusing.

Food Science, Folklore, and Health, FST 10

I’d rather not jinx myself, but there is a good chance that I will not have to take my food science final. We have 3 tests and one final and the lowest grade out of all of them will be dropped. So as long as I have an A average on all the other tests I don’t have to take the final, which would mean I have 1 ½ weeks of spring break. But there is always a chance that I will sleep through a test, be sick, or for some reason do poorly on a test and have to take the final anyway. And there is no term paper for the class, which is also wonderful. The class looks interesting, and I’m looking forward to the reading. Right now I think I’m going to go take a nap.

Thoughts

I’m back to school, and back to obsessively checking websites because I’d rather do that than do school work.
I’d like to sit around all day and watch Veronica Mars.
Squealy, loud people will soon drive me crazy.
I’m going to do my best to make school my main focus in life. Other activities will include eating, going to the gym, sleeping(one of my personal favorites), and watching VM, Deadwood, South Park, and TV.
I want to go skiing lots, but I’m not sure who I am going to go with, or when.
I want to take classes in Davis and live in Santa Cruz. At least Davis doesn’t have as many distractions, however I think studying on Westcliff would be wonderful, I bet I could even steal some WiFi from the houses across the street :D.
Like I said, loud people bother me and I wish my roommates would close the door more often.
I’m mildly grumpy and I don’t feel like tolerating annoying people, so I’m just going to avoid them :)
I enjoy listening to the Bobs.
I want to make guessing the flavor of jellybeans a drinking game, but I have nothing to drink, so we’ll see what happens when the weekend comes around.
My GPA is 3.68. I have complete 22 units so far.
I need to change my major to Biology.
Three is a magic number, 3 Joe Joe’s, 3 jelly beans, ok so that’s all I can think of but those are two very important things!
Oh, and Bob, the grapefruit is a little sour, with a billion seeds, but it might make good marmalade.
It is really dry up here and my dry, scratchy fingers keep reminding me.
Marzipan is wonderful.
I like my new clothes.
“We live in a world of constant pressure!” says my Chemistry textbook.
“Enthalpy”, ok now I think they are just making up words...
“Enthalpy, H is a thermodynamic function used to describe constant-pressure processes: H=U+PV, and at constant pressure, ΔH=ΔU+PΔV”, wow, fascinating.
And now I’m going to go get stuff at the bookstore and RiteAid.
